Water News

Without water, there is no life. Your body is made up of 70% water and a drop in hydration can have immediate detrimental effects to your health. It is especially important to stay hydrated during the summer months or if you are physically active. Dehydration is the biggest cause of fatigue, headaches and tiredness in the afternoons.

Apart from making up a significant part of every cell in your body, water serves many important functions in your body, without water flushing your system out, your body would be poisoned by it's on waste! So we can confidently say that drinking water is an essential part of every person's day. But when and how much to drink?? Health experts suggest that by the time you feel thirsty you are already significantly dehydrated, so staying hydrated really needs to be a conscious process.

Having a water bottle that you carry around if you are not at home is a great way to do this. Here at Complete Home Filtration, we recommend only carrying glass or stainless steel drinking bottles as using plastic has been linked to adverse health effects with potentially lethal chemicals leaching out of plastics into the water they are carrying on hot days. Most spring water suppliers will advise that bottles should not be kept in temperatures over 30 degrees- that easier said than done when these same bottles are stored in the Australian climate and transported around on the back of trucks in the heat of the summer when consumption is at its highest. It is for this reason that experts advise to never drink water that has been stored in plastic and left in a hot car where temperatures can reach over 50 degrees.

Water quality is important when you consider how much water we drink on a daily and annual basis. Small amounts of contaminants ingested over long periods of time can do damage. Drinking water that is as pure as possible enables your body to get the maximum benefit out of it. Your body doesn't need to filter things out of the water then get the benefit. The clean, chemical-free water enters your body and immediately gets to work hydrating all of your cells and flushing your system out. See out website page on health benefits for more info.

Water Filtration

There are really too many reasons to buy a whole house water filter to mention without totally boring everybody to death, so here's the top 4:

  1. Its better for your Health Chlorine is a form of bleach and it's in your tap water. It is a fact that drinking chlorinated water has been linked to cancer. There is a multitude of clinical studies to this effect. Download our free ebook for the references. Also, your body is covered in the skin which is a functioning organ- the largest in your body in fact. This organ absorbs things in and excretes things out. Whether you want it too or not this is occurring constantly.

When you shower in chlorinated water your body is absorbing whatever is in that water. Many experts have estimated that a 10-minute shower leads to the same levels of chlorine absorption as drinking 8 glasses of chlorinated water. So if you want to protect your body or the other loved ones in your home, from the potentially harmful effects of chlorine and other common contaminants found in tap water then it makes sense to filter the water you bath and shower in.

  2. It is better for beauty Chlorine is a drying agent and is damaging your hair and skin. Clean, good quality water keeps your skin beautiful for longer. We cant stop time but we can try to stay youthful looking. We all want to look our best for as long as possible and not age prematurely, so why oh why are we all putting chlorine on our skin every day? and sometimes twice a day! Dull lifeless hair and dried out skin can all result from chlorine in tap water. There is absolutely no need to be showering with bad water when we live in a modern world and have the means to provide this for ourselves. After the initial outlay to get the system installed, the ongoing running costs can be as little as $150 per year- and that gets you filtered water from every tap in your home!

  3. Its better for your home Hard water is doing damage to your home. Hard mineral deposits in your home are wreaking havoc on your water using appliances and fixtures. Are you sick of your kettle getting white floaties in it? Shower screen covered in a white hard to shift film? Showerhead blocked up? Expensive water heaters just not hacking it and lasting as long as they should? These are all signs that you need to reduce the hardness of your tap water.

  4. It's better for our environment. It is a sad fact that as we have evolved as a civilisation that the toll we have taken on the environment around us is getting more extreme. Chemical runoff from industry, pesticides and herbicides from farming, acid rain, plastic disposal and carbon emissions along with many other forms of pollution all add to our exposure to harmful elements and also the exposure of other animals sharing this environment with us.

As we have realised that tap water tastes awful and is no good for you, the bottled water industry has thrived- unfortunately, this has added to the detrimental effect on the environment. Stories and photos can be found on the internet of massive collections of plastic floating in the oceans and animals harmed by ingesting various parts of this plastic. Now we are starting to pay attention with health experts not pointing out that we are in fact being polluted with plastic ourselves, with alarming amounts of plastic fibres being found in tap water and in the very food we eat. Take control of the water you use in your home and install a Complete Home Filtration today.

Reverse Osmosis

There is a common misconception that a whole house water filter is an expensive luxury only affordable for the rich and famous, however, once the initial cost of the system and install have been paid the ongoing costs of a whole house system save families money and the initial investment adds value to your home.

Filter replacements are typically less than $200 per year which equates to about 50 bottles of 375mls of bottled water (roughly $4) or one a week! So if one family member buys one bottle of pump per week and your system saves them from this, then you are break even. If four people in your family no longer need to buy three bottles of water each per week, then you have now saved $600.

Now add the savings for fewer soaps and shampoos needed to create a lather when using soft water and the savings from extended lifespan on your water using appliances, never mind the increased energy efficiency from your water heater. All this without any consideration for the money saved on skin creams and health-related purchases. It is the cheaper option, not the more expensive one when you run the numbers.

Water Filtration

Plain old tap water: It's easy and quick. It's convenient, and it comes right out of your kitchen faucet.

However, as we’ve seen sometimes tap water is contaminated with a host of pollutants that may increase your risk of severe health problems. At the very least many people will accept that it tastes bad and doesn't smell great either, if it didn't there wouldn't be a bottled water or water filtration industry at all.

Let's take a look at some of these chemicals and how they can adversely affect the health of you and your family.
It's a fact that Chlorine has been added to drinking water by the Water treatment facilities since the late 1800's. By 1904, adding chlorine had become the standard practice in water treatment. A hundred years later chlorine is still the most widely used chemical to purify water.

We use chlorine not because it's the safest and one of the most effective means of disinfectants; we use it because it is the cheapest we can get. We have achieved significant technological advances, but we still pour bleach in our water before we drink it.  To be clear the water that arrives at your home from your local water supplier should and will comply with the Australian Drinking water guidelines, (water sampling results can be found on their websites) however the acceptable level of chemicals and other potentially dangerous elements is something that is hard for all health experts and governing bodies globally to agree on.

Using of chlorinated drinking water' long-term effects have been recognised only recently. According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, "Cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those who use non-chlorinated water.

Water filtration pioneer Robert Slovak talks about the dangers of disinfection byproducts.

“Disinfection byproducts are the result of disinfecting water with chlorine. It is important to note that while consuming chlorine is certainly not healthy, DBPs are TEN THOUSAND TIMES more dangerous!
In addition to being a powerful carcinogenic, DPBs have also been linked to liver, kidney and nervous system problems.”

Reverse Osmosis

We all want the best for our new baby, but before you splash out on that new pram-did you know that due to their small size and proportionately high levels of chemical and other contaminates in tap water your baby will be the most exposed in your home to raw tap water? Investing in a whole home water filtration system and Reverse Osmosis system for drinking water for babies bottles is the best and most sensible way to spoil your baby.

Install a CHF Platinum systems soon as you know you are pregnant or even before you start trying to ensure you provide the best protection for your child. Clean, filtered water from every tap means limited exposure to harmful chemicals through showers and bathes, which can be particularly important if you have a family history of eczema or asthma. Not only is chlorine bad for skin but experts have identified chlorine vapours from showers as asthma attack triggers.

Water Guidelines

Why is the allowable safe limit for Fluoride in our water-according to the Australian Drinking Water guidelines at 1.5mg/L - more than twice what the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) recommends?

That should make you stop and think about who is correct and if the experts can’t agree- what is the safe limit of fluoride in our drinking water?

Here are a few facts to consider:

  • Fluoride has been used as an oral health drug in the majority of Australian tap water since 1953. Even though it is a drug for oral health, there is no consideration given to dose and body weight. It’s a one dose fits all, which is contrary to the standard guidelines for dosage of most drugs.
  • Naturally, occurring Fluoride is different than the fluoride that they add to most drinking water, with artificial fluoride often producing by-products such as fluorosilicic acid and sodium silicofluoride.
  • Chronic fluoride ingestion of 1 ppm of fluoride in drinking water can cause mottling of the teeth (fluorosis), and an exposure of 1.7 ppm will produce mottling in 30–50 % of patients.
  • 50 Studies have linked fluoride with reduced IQ in children. (Source- www.fluoridealert.org)  Fluoride Levels in Water: IQ reductions have been significantly associated with fluoride levels of just 0.15 to 1.38 mg/L (Bashash 2017); 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L (Sudhir 2009); 0.88 mg/L among children with iodine deficiency. (Lin 1991) Other studies have found IQ reductions at 1.4 ppm (Zhang 2015); 1.8 ppm (Xu 1994); 1.9 ppm (Xiang 2003a,b); 0.3-3.0 ppm (Ding 2011); 2.0 ppm (Yao 1996, 1997); 2.1 ppm (Das 2016); 2.1-3.2 ppm (An 1992); 2.2 ppm (Choi 2015); 2.3 ppm (Trivedi 2012); 2.38 ppm (Poureslami 2011); 2.4-3.5 ppm (Nagarajappa 2013); 2.45 ppm (Eswar 2011); 2.5 ppm (Seraj 2006); 2.5-3.5 ppm (Shivaprakash 2011); 2.85 ppm (Hong 2001); 2.97 ppm (Wang 2001, Yang 1994); 3.1 ppm (Seraj 2012); 3.15 ppm (Lu 2000); 3.94 ppm (Karimzade 2014); and 4.12 ppm (Zhao 1996).
  • 97% of Western Europe has rejected tap water fluoridation. The only western European countries that allow salt fluoridation are Austria, France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.
  • Tooth decay rates have declined in Europe as precipitously over the last 50 years as they have in the USA.
  • World leading health expert Dr Mercola advises that even at the so-called safe dose of fluoride links have been made to conditions affecting the heart, brain and thyroid as well as behavioural issues such as autism and ADHD.
The following chart from www.fluoridealert.org shows levels of Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth in children under 12 from the World Health Organisation between 1970 and 2010.
  • “Although the prevalence of caries varies between countries, levels everywhere have fallen greatly in the past three decades, and national rates of caries are now universally low. This trend has occurred regardless of the concentration of fluoride in water or the use of fluoridated salt, and it probably reflects the use of fluoridated toothpaste and other factors, including perhaps aspects of nutrition.”SOURCE: Cheng KK, et al. (2007). Adding fluoride to water supplies - British Medical Journal 335(7622):699-702.

The great fluoride debate continues.  In the meantime, if you would like some help removing fluoride from your drinking water while the experts battle it out to discover if it is making our kids less intelligent and not doing much for their teeth, then don’t hesitate to get in touch today.

Water News

Time and time again we hear our customers report almost immediate differences in their skin and hair once their Complete Home Filtration system is installed.  People also report a difference in the state of their shower screens and shower heads due to the softening effect of our systems. People drink their own tap water more when the taste is improved and it no longer smells like chlorine.  This results in less plastic bottles being required which undeniably is better for the world we all live in and - it seems due to recent scientific findings, much better for our health too.  Plastic particles have been found in many big brand bottled water samples.

Yet only around 2% of Australians have a whole home solution.

So how do we get the message out to homeowners around the country to tell them about this fantastic alternative for all their water filtration needs?

One way is through online marketing and writing blogs like this one and promoting this content through other avenues such as Facebook and Google.  A small amount of customers will actually read it and request quotes.  Then there is the media such as TV and Radio- which all costs lots of money, which then in turn pushes the price of the products up for the end user.

Door to door and Telemarketing promotions for Water Filtration products have been happening throughout Australia for the last 10 plus years and done properly are a fantastic, cost effective way to let people know about the options available for them.

However these home visits by promotions staff need to be carried out in a way that leaves customers with a positive experience and is fully compliant with the applicable laws.

Here are some of the rules which door-to door promotions or sales people must follow:

  1. Unsolicited visits to your home must be within the hours of 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday weekdays, 9 am to 5 pm Saturdays and never on a Sunday or public holiday.
  2. The Rep. must be upfront and identify themselves and where they are from, showing an ID badge and explaining the purpose for their visit.
  3. A sales person must stipulate that upon request by you they are to leave your premises immediately.
  4. Cooling off periods apply to any sales made via an unsolicited approach.
  5. For further information on the this see https://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/consumer-protection/cooling-0?_ga=2.243778501.1982633586.1535674273-47345605.1535674273

Complete Home Filtration from time to time utilises small promotions teams that carry out targeted door to door campaigns in areas where we are doing installations, normally sourced from other marketing campaigns such as Facebook, Google or referrals.
While our plumbers are in certain areas we like to offer a Free Home Assessment to other homeowners in the area to talk to them about our products and test their water for chlorine levels and TDS to see which of our systems, if any, would suit them best.

If one of our team knocks on your door they will all identify themselves with their ID badge and let you know who we are and what we are doing.  If the homeowner is interested in speaking with one of our team for a Free Home Assessment and Water Test they will take your details and book you in for a convenient time.  They will leave you with an appointment card, clearly stating the Company name and what we sell.  Further to this we will also have one of our office based team call the morning of the appointment to verify and confirm the time and what the appointment will entail.  We do this to ensure that homeowners do not assume we are from any other Company including the Water Corp.
Once the appointment is confirmed it will be allocated to one of our team to meet the appointment.

If after the appointment the customer wishes to have a system installed they can fill in a Sales Agreement which has notice of the 10 Days to cool off clearly printed to ensure customer are aware of it and a notice of the 10 Day Cooling off procedure.

Due to our procedures we have never had a customer call or email to complain.

Unfortunately other Companies in the market practice techniques and methods that leave a lot to be desired.  If you experience this we encourage you to contact the Department of Commerce to report them.

PFAS- The asbestos of our time and it may be in the water you drink and shower in.

PFAS is quickly becoming a hot topic across Australia and indeed the world with names such as Erin Brockovich now involved in class action here in Australia. Two class action lawsuits have already been filed in Katherine in the Northern Territory and Oakey in Queensland in regards to PFAS contamination and here in WA some residents are concerned after their water supply was tested and shown to contain higher than ideal levels.

Brockovich has said "It's the potential for an emerging national crisis. This is a dangerous chemical. Companies and governments have been warned for many years to keep an eye out for this.”

How do PFAS’s enter the Environment?

Most of the current controversy surrounds the use of firefighting foams such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) which was used to fight fires and for firefighting training from the 1970s to the mid-2000s.

PFAS is also found in heat and stain resistant products such as Teflon, scotch guard and many other products manufactured by 3M.  PFAS can be released into the environment from landfill sites where products and materials containing these chemicals breakdown and can get into surface and ground water through sewage discharges.

The biggest problem with PFAS (PFOS AND PFOA) is that they do not break down in the environment and can travel for long distances through water and air.  They are in fact known to bio- accumulate which means they can build up over time in animals including humans. PFAS contamination has been linked in studies in the US to infertility and many other serious health concerns such as thyroid disease, suppressed immune functions and even cancer.

The Commonwealth Department of Defence is undertaking PFAS investigations at various sites in Western Australia—including:

Scientific knowledge regarding PFAS’ environmental occurrence, effects of exposure, test methods and remediation technologies is rapidly evolving worldwide.

Filtration media known to significantly reduce PFAS is Activated carbon and Reverse Osmosis.
